Women's US Open - Superb Clijsters claims title

Kim Clijsters won the US Open for the second consecutive year as she continued her terrific 21-match unbeaten record at the US Open. Clijsters defeated Vera Zvonareva in a disappointing one-sided finale, 6-1 6-2. Both players started well with two routine service holds; however at 3-2 down Zvonareva's level dropped as Clijsters pummelled her baseline with incredible width and depth. Zvonareva continued to struggle as her error count increased and it wasn't long until the first set had gone. A frustrated Zvonareva continued to try and battle with Clijsters from the back of the court but Clijsters was far too strong as she quickly pulled up a 3-0 lead in the 2nd set. Zvonareva managed to get a game on the board and fought hard to a break point at 3-1 after some titanic baseline rallies; however Clijsters held and continued to play with an air of confidence as she rounded off the victory in less than an hour. Zvonareva looked distraught at the end as she came to terms with another crushing grand slam loss; however she was extremely gracious in defeat as she gave credit to Kim for her victory. After employing such superb tactics in her SF with Wozniacki, it seems this was one step too far. If she had tried to mix her game up more she may have had more luck however on this night it would have taken a top notch performance to get near Clijsters. Congratulations Kim!
