US Open Day 1 - Sharapova battles past Watson

Maria Sharapova eventually battled past Heather Watson in an absorbing encounter, 3-6 7-5 6-3. Watson was consistent throughout and displayed superb athleticism around the court to absorb Sharapova's power. However in the end, Sharapova was too strong for Heather but she should be proud of her efforts because she hung in superbly and showed an excellent attitude throughout the match.

Watson reminds me of the likes of Wozniacki, Radwanska and Zvonareva; she is extremely solid around the court however she lacks the ability to hit winners. It is probably too early to say how far she will go in the Women's game but I think she has the potential to be a top 20 player. The second serve needs a lot of work and she will have to work on being more aggressive and displaying more variety in her game in the future but at this moment in time, her progression is promising. It was another battling display from Sharapova who displayed her fantastic fighting spirit once again, coming from 6-3 1-0 down. This was a good test for her and I expect her next few rounds to be much more straight forward. I hope to keep blogging here and there over the next two weeks and in between work :)
