I feel like I am constantly beating down on this year's US Open, but it will go down as one of the most unmemorable slams in recent times. A good ending to the Championships will go some way to changing that but we have had a significant lack of quality matches particularly on the mens side.
1. Novak Djokovic v Stanislas Wawrinka
Novak Djokovic |
Wawrinka, playing in his first Grand Slam semi-final, will be eager to get one on Djokovic after a scintillating 4th rounder at this year's Australian Open where the Swiss world number 2 was left heartbroken after coming up short despite a magnificent performance, losing 12-10 in the decider. Djokovic leads the head-to-head by 12 wins to 2 with both Wawrinka wins coming in 2006. Wawrinka is playing extremely well this week, both aggressive and mentally tuned in. I am so very tempted to go for the upset in this one, but I have to look at the overall picture and the fact that this is Stan's first GS semi-final and to beat Djokovic over a best of five set match is not to be overlooked.
Prediction - Djokovic to beat Wawrinka in 5 sets
2. Rafael Nadal v Richard Gasquet
Richard Gasquet |
The head-to-head is not a pretty sight for the Frenchman. Nadal leads it 10-0 with Gasquet commenting in his post-match interview that the only time he has beaten Rafa was at an under 13's tournament. Gasquet has won just 4 sets off Nadal and every encounter since 2008 has been a straight setter. If Gasquet was to pull something out of the bag in this one it would be one of the shocks of the season. I think 1 tight set is the best you can ask of Reeshard because Rafa looks immense at the minute...
Prediction - Nadal to beat Gasquet in 3 sets (1 tight, 2 easy)
Is anyone predicting an upset? count me in. Stan-the man in 5 sets-revenge for Aussie, for the survival of the '1-handed back hand order',and for his fellow countryman Roger Federer. He'll steam roll through the match while Djokovic will for sure give away opportunities here and there. His easy draw hasn't helped much and he's not properly warmed up to face Stan in his current form. He'll put up a proper fight in the later stages of the match but by that time it'll be too late. Nadal facing all 1 handers from the round of 16 all the way to the finals has a nice ring to it. Providence's way of paying tribute to the end of an era(Federer's) and the beginning of a new one. Think about it...
