Kaia Kanepi capped off a fine week in Brisbane with a comprehensive victory over Daniela Hantuchova in the final, 6-2 6-1. Kanepi, the world number 34 dominated a one-sided encounter with her thumping groundstrokes and solid serve, which was too consistent for Hantuchova to impose herself on this final. It is interesting to note that this time last year, Petra Kvitova won the event in Brisbane whilst also ranked at number 34 in the rankings and she went onto have a meteoric rise in the rankings throughout 2011. Kanepi had an excellent season in 2010 where she made two Grand Slam quarter-finals, but she struggled last year due to injury. She has always been a talented yet streaky player, but this week she demonstrated a more consistent game with fewer errors. I have also found in the past that she often looks disinterested when she is playing; however this week she showed renewed belief in her game and a more positive attitude on the court. If she can keep this form up over the next couple of months, there is no doubt she will break the top 10 soon...
Review of predictions - Overall, it was a shocking week for me in Brisbane! I correctly predicted the likes of Serena, Clijsters, Jankovic and Petkovic into the quarter-finals, but failed to predict either Hantuchova or Kanepi's run to the finals.
