US Open: Sharapova and Azarenka to meet in Semi-Finals

Azarenka
The first two quarter-finals looked like they would be very straightforward for Maria Sharapova and Victoria Azarenka based on the head-to-heads, but they would be anything but as Marion Bartoli and Sam Stosur both made some new ground against the soon-to-be world top two.  Victoria Azarenka was first into the quarter-finals as she edged Sam Stosur, 6-1 4-6 7-6 in an absolute cracker on Ashe.  Stosur had never won a set against Azarenka but produced one of her best performances of the year before eventually falling a tight third set tiebreaker.  Stosur was extremely upbeat in her post-match conference as she knew she had given it a good go and there were just a few points here and there that separated the pair.

Sharapova prevailed against Marion Bartoli, 3-6 6-3 6-4 in a terrifically intense second quarter-final.  Like Stosur, Bartoli won her first ever set against Sharapova and picked up where she left off against Petra Kvitova; however Sharapova was just too solid for the fist pumping Frenchwoman.  Bartoli's constant fist pumping and shadow swinging was hilarious as usual and had Sharapova on the ropes early on, but the Russian slowly worked her way into the match and despite a few stumbles in the final set, wrapped up the win convincingly
