Wimbledon 2013, That's a wrap: Magical Murray beats Djokovic in straight sets, 6-4 7-5 6-4

Andy Murray
Wow... I am still in shock, but Andy Murray has been crowned the Wimbledon champion after beating Novak Djokovic in straight sets, 6-4 7-5 6-4.  Murray played a fine match and came back from breaks in both the second and third set.  Murray played a sensational game with a string of brilliant passing shots to break Djokovic at 4-4 in the third set and then after missing three championship points when serving for it in one of the most nervewracking games EVER (I remind you I am a Brit!), he finally converted on a 4th championship point.  I thought he showed nerves of steel to convert on that 5-4 game.

Djokovic was not at his best in this match, committing far too many unforced errors.  Perhaps Juan Martin del Potro tired him out in the semi-finals or it was the hot, hot conditions.  As usual though, he showed incredible sportsmanship at the end. I still cannot believe it, Murray is a Wimbledon champion! It wasn't a great match, totally brutal as ever, but I am happy with the outcome :-)

It really has been a completely crazy fortnight at Wimbledon and all in all, I think it's been a pretty great one.  The first week was littered with upsets as Rafael Nadal fell on the first day to Steve Darcis (it feels so long ago!) and the top seeds were dropped like flies on "Black Wednesday", which saw Roger Federer, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Maria Sharapova and Victoria Azarenka all exit the tournament in what will go down as the strangest day of tennis I have ever witnessed.

Even though there were upsets, the tennis has not disappointed into the second week.  Two sensational semi-finals will certainly be on my panel of matches at the end of the year when determining my favourite match of 2013; Sabine Lisicki's three set extra-time victory over Agnieszka Radwanska was not necessarily one of the highest quality tennis matches, but it had bundles of excitement and drama.  Novak Djokovic's five set win over Juan Martin del Potro was certainly the match of the tournament in my eyes.

I do feel incredibly sad that the grass court season and Wimbledon is over (mixed doubles still to come, but I have to head off now).  My holiday has now ended and it's back to reality tomorrow!  I hope all you enjoyed my blogs over the past couple of weeks and thanks all to reading.  I can safely say based on my viewing figures from the past two years that the second Monday of Wimbledon (Magic Monday) is the most popular day in the tennis calendar.

Tennis does take a bit of a breather although there are five tournaments next week! The ATP head to Bastad (Sweden), Stuttgart and Newport (USA) with Tomas Berdych, Tommy Haas and Sam Querrey headlining the respective tournaments.  The WTA will be in Palermo and Budapest with Sara Errani returning to her beloved clay in Italy and Lucie Safarova topping the bill in Hungary.  I have not yet decided if I will blog these events.  I have already missed the boat with my original previews, but I may start focusing on individual matches later in the week... Wimbledon has taken its toll on me ;-)

incredibly that the grass court season Wimbledon 2013 ...

Djoko appeared in an amorphous state ..? often he made break in the 2ème and 3ème sets but no keep ahead ?

Why he did not attack more low Service second ball Murray ... it's a mystery.

    But this is the game......

I'm happy for you Moo, :-) that goal Andy Murray has-been crowned the Wimbledon champion.

Sorry for you that this is the end of your holiday, :-(

    1. Lajiao your missing the US Open? really? or your watching from Spain? I also wondered why the danger wasn't there for Djoko attacking Murray's second serve-but as for hitting it more low, maybe Djokovic was nervous or afraid to hit it into the net? He did have a lot of unforced errors-I guess he was feeling the pressure to be agressive and take risks. Unforced errors count is the most important aspect of Djokovic's game in my opinion-he usually fine-tunes that skill throughout the course of a tournament so when that number is high you know Djokovic is in some sort of trouble. He is arguably the most clinical ball hitter out there and a typical Torro-like Agassi,Murray-all very precise ball hitters/counter punchers.

      So I missing the U.S. Open :-(

In my memories Djoko also lost against Murray at the U.S. Open in 2012
