Maria Sharapova |
The womens tournament has not been a classic so far in Indian Wells, but we should get a good final between Caroline Wozniacki and Maria Sharapova, who are both hunting for their first silverware in 2013 tomorrow. Wozniacki edged Angelique Kerber, 2-6 6-4 7-5 in an entertaining moonball-fest of a semi-final, meanwhile Sharapova produced her cleanest performance of the week to take out fellow Russian, Maria Kirilenko in straight sets. This has been Wozniacki's best week on the tour for quite sometime and although she has got lucky along the way with a walkover from Victoria Azarenka in the quarters, she has taken her chances. She has been playing with a touch more aggression to her play, which will of course bring errors, but more opportunities too.
Sharapova has had a doddle this week and she faces another counter-puncher in the final. It has been a dream draw for the Russian who has played far from her best throughout the two weeks, but she has never needed to step it up anymore and has yet to lose a set. Sharapova leads the head-to-head by 4 wins to 2 with both wins for Wozniacki coming on hard courts and her last one, a thrashing in Indian Wells as the world number one back in 2011. Their last match was an excellent semi-final in Miami where Wozniacki had her moments, but Sharapova prevailed, 4-6 6-2 6-4. Wozniacki is playing well, but the weapons of Sharapova will always give her the edge in this kind of match-up and I think she will good enough on the day to defeat Wozniacki and claim the title...
Prediction - Sharapova to beat Wozniacki in 2 sets (1 tight, 1 easy)
