Simon defeats lacklustre Tsonga in Monte-Carlo

Gilles Simon
Gilles Simon, who had lost his last four encounter to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, turned the table on his fellow compatriot with a solid 7-5 6-4 victory.  Simon took advantage of some wayward hitting from Tsonga and the slow conditions to reach the semi-finals.  I was impressed with Simon today who played a very good match with some excellent retrieving and patient play from the baseline.  Tsonga looked disinterested and continues to struggle in 2012 although clay is not his favoured surface so I think until we reach the grass court season, I do not think we will see the best of the Frenchman.

Simon will play Rafael Nadal in the semi-finals, who beat Stanislas Wawrinka, 6-4 7-5.  The other semi-final will see Novak Djokovic take on Tomas Berdych; Djokovic was never really troubled in a 6-4 6-2 win over Robin Haase, meanwhile Berdych produced an impressive performance to get past Andy Murray, 6-7 6-2 6-3.

Semi-Final Predictions:
Nadal to beat Simon in 2 sets
Djokovic to beat Berdych in 3 sets

Fingers crossed we get the final that everyone wants to see.  My predictions continue to be wayward this week... I just cannot get excited about Monte-Carlo this year! There have been few exciting matches so far so lets hope the tournament ends with a bang...
