Gilles Simon |
As was to be expected, the Paris draw has been completely decimated as the top eight have their minds focused on the World Tour Finals, which start on Monday. I predicted the upsets, but the wrong ones! Lets take a look at the surprise semi-finals...
Gilles Simon v Jerzy Janowicz
Jerzy Janowicz has had the best week of his career with a string of stunning wins. His 3rd round victory over Andy Murray, which involved saving a match point was mightily impressive, but he has also beaten Janko Tipsarevic, Marin Cilic and Philipp Kohlschreiber in what has been a hugely encouraging week for the young Pole. Janowicz, who has been rising up the rankings this year and made the 3rd round of Wimbledon earlier this year, will now take on home hope, Gilles Simon. The Frenchman beat Tomas Berdych, 6-4 6-4 in the quarter-finals and has not really been tested in Paris having had a walkover in the third round. Janowicz and Simon have never played each other before and based on this week so far, I would back Janowicz to continue his fairytale run...
Prediction - Janowicz to beat Simon in 2 tight sets
David Ferrer v Michael Llodra
Another surprise semi-finalist was set in the final match of the day where Michael Llodra edged past Sam Querrey in a tight two setter. Llodra had already beaten John Isner and Juan Martin Del Potro in what has been a real turn-up for the books considering that he had not won an ATP main draw match since Roland Garros. He has had great success on the indoor courts of Paris before and now takes on David Ferrer who beat an off-key Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, 6-2 7-5. Ferrer is the only remaining player in the draw who will be featuring in the World Tour Finals, which could go against him; however he is now the clear favourite to win his first ever Masters title. Llodra is a tricky customer and with a home crowd plus a ton of confidence from this week, Ferrer will have to play well to reach the final...
Prediction - Ferrer to beat Llodra in 3 sets
