WTA Carlsbad: Preview and Predictions

It is another bumper week on both the ATP and WTA calendars as tournaments are crammed into this three week period before the Olympics.  I have managed to secure some more tennis tickets for the Olympics so will have a number of reports to give over the coming weeks :-) Anyway lets take a look at this weeks draws...

WTA Carlsbad:
Christina McHale
Marion Bartoli and Dominika Cibulkova headline this weeks hard court tournament in Carlsbad, which has a marginally stronger draw to that of Stanford.  Jelena Jankovic, Yanina Wickmayer and Urszula Radwanska are all in action again, but they are joined by Christina McHale, who is in Bartoli's section, Nadia Petrova and Daniela Hantuchova, who has taken a wildcard into the event.  There are no stand out favourites and the title is well up for takings.  I always back McHale and she has a very good draw this week when you look at Bartoli's form since Miami.  I would also tip Petrova and Wickmayer to make the semi-finals this week.
1st round highlights - Sorana Cirstea vs. Sloane Stephens and Daniela Hantuchova vs. Urszula Radwanska
Final Prediction - Nadia Petrova d. Christina McHale

WTA Bastad:
Klara Zakopalova
Last week, the men graced the clay courts in Sweden and this week its the turn of the women.  Although the Olympics are only two weeks away, Bastad has attracted an impressive line-up.  Sara Errani is the number one seed and will be the favourite having continued to dazzle on the red clay after she won the title in Palermo.  She will have stiff competition from the likes of Julia Goerges, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Roberta Vinci, Klara Zakopalova and Mona Barthel.  Errani has been on great form, but I would be surprised if she can win another title this week.  It is a risky move to bet against Errani, but I fancy Zakopalova, who was the only player to take Sharapova to three sets at the French Open, to be a real threat in this draw.

1st round highlight - Anabel Medina Garrigues vs. Laura Robson
Final Prediction - Klara Zakopalova d. Carla Suarez Navarro

Philipp Kohlschreiber
ATP Hamburg:
An impressive draw takes to the clay in Hamburg; there are no stand-out names, but a host of competent players who will have their eyes on the title.  Nicolas Almagro and defending champion, Gilles Simon are the top two seeds and they are joined in the draw by Philipp Kolhschreiber, Fernando Verdasco, Marin Cilic, Florian Mayer and Tommy Haas.  Almagro, who reached the final in Bastad last week, could meet Kohlschreiber in an interesting quarter-final, meanwhile Simon may have to get past Haas in the second round.  Cilic will be dangerous after scooping the title in Umag...

1st round highlight - Viktor Troicki vs. Lukas Rosol
Final Prediction - Philipp Kolhschreiber d. Marin Cilic

ATP Atlanta:
Andy Roddick
The top Americans have raided Atlanta with John Isner, Mardy Fish, Andy Roddick and Ryan Harrison all competing.  The resurgent, Brian Baker is also in the draw as is the young American, Jack Sock.  Isner has managed to overturn a slump with an impressive run to the title in Newport last week and should make at least the semi-finals based on his draw here.  Fish could meet Harrison in the quarter-finals, Roddick could square off with Kevin Anderson at the same stage and Brian Baker has a promising draw, which should see him climb up the rankings further.

1st round highlight - Ryan Harrison vs. James Blake
Final Prediction - John Isner d. Mardy Fish

There is also a third ATP tournament in Gstaad where Janko Tipsarevic and Marcel Granollers headline... just too much going on!
