Julia Goerges saved two match points to defeat Anastasija Sevastova, 6-4 3-6 7-6 on day 1 of singles action in Linz. Sevastova played some good quality tennis that was well above her ranking of 108 in the world. Sevastova made the 4th round at the Australian Open this year, but has been injured for long periods of the year. Unfortunately, her lack of match practice went against her and she got tight in the final set tiebreak as she served a double fault on her second match point. Her first serve was constantly troubling Goerges at the end of the match, but the second serve was a liability. Goerges was inconsistent as ever and struggling in her returns today, but showed some real guts at the end to save the first match point with a crunching down-the-line winner. She will now play Evgeniya Rodina in the second round.
In other matches, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova beat Anabel Medina Garrigues, 6-4 2-6 6-3. All I have to say is please sort out the serve Nastia!!! She has so much to work on during the off-season! Jelena Jankovic also progressed after Kateryna Bondarenko retired at 4-1 down in the first set. Bondarenko served 8 double faults and was broken to love in each of her three service games as she eventually succumbed to injury. I was hoping to watch a bit of Petra Kvitova against Rebecca Marino in the final match of the day, but Eurosport decided not to play any of it :(
