The number 10 seed, Cirstea |
After a day of solid rain resulted in no play at Birmingham and Queens on Monday, things finally got underway today with the majority of round one matches completed. In Birmingham, three out of the four seeds in action were beaten. Most surprisingly, the young Brit Tara Moore destroyed Iveta Benesova, 6-1 6-2. Anne Keothavong comfortably beat the woefully out-of-form, Tamira Paszek and Melanie Oudin's comeback trail was cranked up a notch with her biggest win of the year against Sorana Cirstea in 3 sets. The Brits had a very successful day with Heather Watson, Laura Robson and Mel South making it five British women successfully into the second round. There were no surprises at Queens as Ivo Karlovic strolled past Lleyton Hewitt, 6-2 6-3 in the highlight match on day one.
You can view my original predictions for Queens, Birmingham and Halle as the grass court season kicks off this week. I had an especially good day regarding Queens as I correctly predicted 20/23 completed first round matches. From tomorrow, I will start previewing individual matches from this week's tournaments...
