Jelena Jankovic |
Birmingham has always been affected by the weather but none more so than this year as play was practically wiped out on Thursday and Friday resulting in the final quarter-final and semi-finals being played today. Jelena Jankovic beat Misaki Doi in the quarter-finals and then edged past Zheng Jie, 6-7 7-5 6-1 in an entertaining match. Zheng picked up an injury in the third set so I would expect her to pull out of Eastbourne now, but she has had a great week in Birmingham.
The second semi-final saw Melanie Oudin continue her superb week by taking out former Eastbourne champion, Ekaterina Makarova in three sets. Oudin, who has just been awarded a wildcard into this year's Wimbledon Championships, beat Jankovic in their only previous encounter at Wimbledon in 2009. Jankovic claimed after the match that Oudin had "no weapons" so I think Jankovic will be desperate for the win tomorrow.
As I posted earlier, David Nalbandian was defaulted in the Queens Final to hand the title to Marin Cilic, which is still completely surreal! In Halle, Tommy Haas produced an almighty shock by beating Roger Federer, 7-6 6-4 in the final. It really has been a crazy day of tennis!!!
Summary of my original predictions made at the start of last week:
WTA Birmingham - A complete mess but I did manage to correctly predict Zheng and Makarova into the Semi-finals.
ATP Queens - Once again, a mess although started pretty well with some correct predictions into the third round.
ATP Halle - I felt Nadal wouldn't get to the final and had Haas to the quarter-finals, but never saw him beating Federer in the final!
