1. Caroline Wozniacki v Jamie Hampton
Jamie Hampton |
As most of the top womens players are headed to the Wimbledon party tonight, Caroline Wozniacki was still in Eastbourne digging deep and trying to turn her season around. She enjoyed a solid win over Ekaterina Makarova, 4-6 6-0 6-3, who has lost all 6 matches with the Woz now, who will take on surprise semi-finalist, Jamie Hampton. The American is really proving her mettle right now and showed she is no one trick pony as she backed up her first round win over the top seed, Aga Radwanska with wins over Hsieh Su-Wei and Lucie Safarova, who actually served for the match in the second set of their quarter-final.
I really like Hampton's game and would probably go for her if this was a Grand Slam match, but I am going for Wozniacki as I think Hampton will be tired having come through qualifying and because of her inexperience at this level. I still do not see much in Wozniacki's game apart from consistency, but I think it well get her into the final tomorrow.

At 10am in the UK, the Wimbledon draw will be announced tomorrow! I will be eagerly listening at work ;-) The big talking point in the mens draw will be which quarter the number 5 seed, Rafael Nadal lands in. It is possible there could be one half with Djokovic, Federer and Nadal, and the other half with Murray and Ferrer, which would be hilarious. The looming unseeded players to look out for include Ernests Gulbis, Feliciano Lopez, Xavier Malisse and Lleyton Hewitt.
There is certainly less interest in the top seeds for the womens draw as not many people are looking past Serena right now. There are though, a lot of dangerous unseeded players to look out for including Laura Robson, Kristina Mladenovic, Jamie Hampton, Simona Halep, Kaia Kanepi, Daniela Hantuchova, Yanina Wickmayer, Madison Keys, Bethanie Mattek-Sands, Tsvetana Pironkova and Donna Vekic. The early rounds of the Wimbledon womens draw will certainly be more intriguing than the mens.
This weekend, I will be posting my full analysis of both the mens and womens Wimbledon draws. The top two weeks of the tennis season have nearly arrived...
