Men's US Open - Verdasco, Wawrinka win epics

The 4th round came to a close on Tuesday with both Fernando Verdasco and Stan Wawrinka winning epic battles to reach the QF's. Fernando Verdasco produced a stirring comeback to defeat compatriot David Ferrer, 5-7 6-7 6-3 6-3 7-6 coming from 2 sets down. Verdasco was also a break down in the final set and recovered from a 1-4 final set tiebreak deficit to win 6 points in a row finishing the encounter off with a sensational winner on the run. Stan Wawrinka also won a 5 set epic to back up his win over Andy Murray with a 7-6 6-7 7-5 4-6 6-4 victory over Sam Querrey. Wawrinka served for a two set lead but Wawrinka showed his nerves and let Querrey back into the match, which saw many changes of momentum. Verdasco will now play number 1 seed, Rafael Nadal in the QF's who produced another excellent performance in beating Feliciano Lopez, 6-3 6-4 6-4. Wawrinka will now take on Mikhail Youzhny who comfortably saw off Tommy Robredo in 4 sets with his powerful and dominating groundstrokes.

In other matches, both Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer eased into the QF's; Djokovic sailed past Mardy Fish 6-3 6-4 6-1 and Federer defeated Melzer 6-3 7-6 6-3. Djokovic will now play Gael Monfils who won an entertaining all french encounter with Richard Gasquet, 6-4 7-5 7-5. Federer will face off against Soderling once again after Soderling defeated Albert Montanes in 4 sets.
