Women's US Open - JJ out, Wicky wins thriller

Jelena Jankovic was knocked out of the US Open after a disappointing defeat to Kaia Kanepi losing 6-2 7-6. Jankovic failed to cope with the windy conditions and despite having a brief resurgence in the second set, Kanepi stood strong to defeat Jankovic in a one-sided tiebreak. Kanepi has been on superb form after a QF appearance at Wimbledon and will next play Yanina Wickmayer who edged past Patty Schnyder in a thrilling 7-6 3-6 7-6 victory. For much of the match Schnyder held her own with her superb variety of shots against Wickmayer's rather one-dimensional game. However Wickmayer was just the more consistent player in the tiebreak as Schnyder double faulted on MP. I would fancy Kanepi to continue her run of upsets by beating Wickmayer in the next round.

In other matches, Caroline Wozniacki continued her dominant form as she lost just one game to add to her total of 3 lost as she blitzed past Yung-Jan Chan, 6-0 6-1 producing by far the more consistent tennis in the windy conditions. Wozniacki will now play Maria Sharapova in the highlight 4th round match after Sharapova destroyed Beatrice Capra with a double bagel, 6-0 6-0. Capra could not deal with Sharapova's power as she struggled to cause her any problems whatsoever creating just 3 winners. In the night match Svetlana Kuznetsova continued to look a threat as she produced an assured performance beating Maria Kirilenko, 6-3 6-4 and will now play Dominika Cibulkova who thrashed Lourdes Domingues Lino, 6-0 6-1. Vera Zvonareva also progressed to the 4th round with a comfortable 6-2 7-6 win over Alexandra Dulgheru and will now face the tricky Andrea Petkovic who did not have to take to the court on Saturday as Shaui Peng pulled out with an elbow injury. On paper, it looks like Vera Zvonareva has an excellent draw and that one of the SF spots should be hers if she plays solidly in the next two rounds.
