Sam Stosur beat Elena Dementieva, 6-3 2-6 7-6 in a thriller on Arthur Ashe Stadium in what was the latest ever finish for a women's match at the US Open. Stosur dominated the early proceedings using her penetrating groundstrokes and big serve to great effect however her form dipped in the second set as Dementieva raised her game to level at one set all. The third set was a topsy turvy affair with Dementieva having leads at 3-0 and 5-2 however after 4MP's which were characterised by lengthy exchanges, Stosur hung on and then dominated the final set tiebreak to book her place in the QF in what has been by far her best performance at the US. Once again Dementieva was left disappointed and will be rueing those missed match points. Stosur will now play Kim Clijsters in the next round who walloped Ana Ivanovic in a one sided affair, 6-1 6-2. Clijsters is raising her game at the right time after a slow start to her campaign. She was dominant in beating Ivanovic, who will be pleased with her 4R showing but feel there is still much work to do if she is to compete with the best.
In further 4th round action, Venus Williams overcame a gritty Shahar Peer, 7-6 6-3. The first set was an entertaining affair highlighted by the game at 5-6 with 8 deuces which Peer battled through after saving 5 set points. Ultimately, Venus was too strong in the tiebreak and despite Peer's superb battling qualities, she just did not have enough weapons to hurt Venus. Venus Williams will now play Francesca Schiavone in a potentially exciting QF after Schiavone brushed past Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in a surprisingly one-sided affair, 6-3 6-0. A-Pav appeared to be struggling with an injury in the second set and was making numerous errors off her backhand side contributing to an easy victory for the French Open Champion.
On Monday, the remaining matches from the 4th round will be played with everyone looking forward to Maria Sharapova v Caroline Wozniacki. Wozniacki is playing some of her best stuff however this will be her biggest test and with many people doubting her credentials against the top players, this will be her chance to prove to the critics she can win her first major here...
