Agnieszka Radwanska |
Agnieszka Radwanska beat Venus Williams in the quarter-finals of the Sony Ericsson Open, 6-4 6-1. It was a very good match, but the talking point was Venus who looked shattered right from the get go. She fought courageously however as she employed an ultra-aggressive approach to the match and advanced to the net at any available opportunity. Radwanska still had to play a good match to get the win as she hit 17 winners to 7 unforced errors. She played very smart tennis and could easily have thought too much about what her opponent was doing, like her loss to Victoria Azarenka earlier this year in Doha, but she stayed focused and played some blinding passing shots. I was silly to predict Venus to win this match... I made note in the third round that fatigue could be an issue but I was very impressed with her win over Ana Ivanovic, that I thought she would have too much power for Radwanska... wrong!
This has been a very interesting week on the WTA tour... Serena, Venus and Clijsters have all returned, but the likes of Radwanska and Wozniacki have stood strong. I'm still amazed that Wozniacki was able to get out of that third quarter which featured three of her most feared opponents (Serena, Clijsters and Goerges). A year ago, Serena and co. could get by with little match fitness, but now the younger generation are finally stepping up to the task at hand and starting to dominate in 2012... its about time :-)
