Maria Sharapova beat Caroline Wozniacki, 4-6 6-2 6-4 in an absorbing semi-final encounter in Miami. Sharapova started the match in fine form, smacking winners from all over the court and hitting the ball cleaner than she had all week. She raced into a 4-1 lead, but from there, she lost five games in a row with a severe brain freeze as her game became riddled with puzzling errors. Wozniacki got balls back in court, but she did nothing special to warrant the first set. The second set was similar to the first as Sharapova went 4-0 up; however this time she managed to convert her advantage.
The third set was very entertaining and we saw glimpses at the end of what Wozniacki really can do as she broke Sharapova's serve at 5-2 up with a truly sensational game including the most forceful play I have ever seen from the Dane. Unfortunately for her, it was too late as Sharapova wrapped up the match on a controversial final point, which saw Wozniacki refuse to shake hands with the umpire, Kader Nouni.
