Su-Wei Hsieh and Sara Errani claim titles

This week's tournament in Kuala Lumpur was ravaged by the wet weather and a host of withdrawals.  The number one seed, Agnieszka Radwanska and the number six seed, Ayumi Morita were both forced to pull out of their quarter-finals and then Petra Martic pulled out during the final handing Su-Wei Hsieh her first ever WTA title.  It was a pretty remarkable week for Martic who was pushed to three sets in all five of her matches including a marathon encounter with Jelena Jankovic in the semi-finals in which she fought off all kinds of deficits to win a 3 hour and 6 minute, 6-7 7-5 7-6 thriller.  It was evident that having already played the semi-final earlier today, Martic had nothing left to give as she retired at 2-6 7-5 4-1 down in the final.

You may be asking who is Su-Wei Hsieh?! Well, she was ranked at 123 in the rankings before this week and made the semi-finals in Pattaya City a couple of weeks ago and despite some slices of luck with one walkover and one opponent retiring this week, she showed that she is not a one-hit wonder.  You can find out more about her from an interview she conducted recently on the WTA website. My Kuala Lumpur predictions were pretty disappointing, but I don't think anyone would have predicted this week's champion!

In Acapulco, the top four seeds all reached the semi-finals, which was the first time this has happened since the International event in Bastad, Sweden back in 2010.  Sara Errani continued her excellent form in 2012 as she beat Flavia Pennetta, 5-7 7-6 6-0 in the final.  The first set saw an astonishing nine breaks of serve before Errani cleaned up her act by storming through the second set tiebreak and subsequent third set.  I managed to correctly predict that Errani would take the title, which makes up for shocker I had in Malaysia!
