ATP Cincinnati - Federer on top in Cincy

Roger Federer won the Cinncinati title on Sunday as he came through in a tight 3 setter with American Mardy Fish, 6-7 7-6 6-4. Federer was not playing at his best but this win, which was his first title since the Australian Open in January will give him an added boost going into the US Open. Furthermore, his closest rivals appear to be struggling with just one week left to go before the US Open begins. Most disappointing was Nadal who was ousted in the QF by Marcos Baghdatis after serving a double fault at 4-4 in the final set. Although this is just a warm up tournament and you should not read too much into the results, i cannot see Nadal winning the US Open based on his form at recent events. On the other hand, Murray looks sharper despite a 3 set defeat to Mardy Fish in blistering heat. Murray appeared to be suffering from his exploits in Toronto and playing in the midday heat so an early loss here did not come as much of a surprise. It was refreshing to see both Roddick and Davydenko pull off some good wins this week, Roddick in particular who dispatched of Djokovic, 6-4 7-5 before failing to close out his SF with Fish when given a chance to in the 2nd set. With many of the main contenders for the US seemingly struggling, it could pave the way for a new GS champion like Juan Martin Del Potro who triumphed at last years US Open.
