Dinara Safina battled her way to a good win last night after beating a woefully inconsistent Andrea Petkovic, 6-3 6-3. Despite the scoreline it was still a battle for Safina who led 6-3 4-0 before finally coming through. Her serve remains an issue however there were less double faults last night. Another improvement for Safina was her attitude to the game which has frequently thwarted her. She was much more positive and was not getting so frustrated when the errors were coming off her racket. She also changed her game plan to just keeping the ball in play which worked against Petkovic who was commiting unforced errors for fun. For Petkovic, who was brought to tears in the 2nd set, it was an extremely disappointing performance and she will want to put this match behind her as she looks towards the US Open. Dinara will now face Lucie Safarova or Nadia Petrova and i feel she will continue to build her confidence this week at a tournament where she has had previous success.
Other notable results included a 3 set win for an injury affected Rezai over Wimbledon SF Kvitova coming through 6-3 in the final set. Shahar Peer was the first seed to exit with a disappointing straight sets defeat to Kaia Kanepi in windy conditions. Jarmilla Groth continued to impress with a straight set win over the experienced Alona Bondarenko. In one of the highlight 1st round matches, Svetlana Kuznetsova overcame Pavlyuchenkova in 3 sets. Kuznetsova continues to improve after a woeful season up to Wimbledon and despite some dodgy patches in this match, she came through comfortably in the final set against an impressive, yet injury affected opponent.
