Caroline Wozniacki and Victoria Azarenka progressed through to the SF's of Montreal after both pulled off impressive performances against more experienced opponents. Wozniacki defeated the French Open Champion, Francesca Schiavone in straight sets and demonstrated much improvement in her power game and her serve dishing out 7 aces. Azarenka defeated Bartoli for the third time in as many months and showed real determination as she held off 4 set points in the 2nd set to progress with a 6-2 7-6 victory. With the news that Serena Williams has pulled out of the US Open, this could be the chance for one of Wozniacki and Azarenka to claim their maiden grand slam title in what should be a wide open field at Flushing Meadows.
In the other 2 QF's, Vera Zvonareva once again came from a set down to defeat Kim Clijsters, however Clijsters was evidently struggling with her movement so the main worry for Kim will be to fully fit for the US Open. It was a shame that Kim picked up the injury because the first two sets had been of a high quality with both players hitting extremely well. In the other QF, Kuznetsova walloped Jie Zheng, 6-1 6-3 as she continues to gather pace ahead of the US. In the SFs, Kuznetsova will take on Wozniacki and Azarenka will play Zvonareva in what should be 2 very close matches.
